Once you've decided you need pouches, the next question is which shape. This choice affects three things at once: what your product looks like on a shelf, how much each pack costs you, and what pack sizes you can offer.

The 10-second version
- Selling on a shelf or online, and want a premium look? → Stand-up pouch.
- Selling on price, in big volumes, through shops and distributors? → Centre-seal pillow pouch.
- Small packs, sachets or samples? → 3-side seal pouch.
Centre-seal pillow pouch — lowest cost
The simplest pouch. Film is wrapped into a tube, sealed along the back, then sealed top and bottom. It lies flat and cannot stand. Best for: namkeen, chips, biscuits, wafers, sachets. Typical size: 10 g – 200 g. Choose it when you sell in volume through shops and distributors and cost per packet matters most.
3-side seal pouch — low cost
A flat pouch sealed on three sides, with the bottom as a fold. Neat, tidy edges and very easy to fill by hand. Best for: spices, masala, tea sachets, samples, single-serve. Typical size: 5 g – 250 g. Choose it when your packs are small and flat, or you're giving out samples and want a clean look on a small budget.
Stand-up pouch — mid to premium
A gusset at the bottom opens out so the pouch stands upright. The most popular retail format in India today. Best for: tea, coffee, spices, dry fruits, pickle, snacks. Typical size: 50 g – 1 kg. Choose it when customers see the pack before buying — retail shelves, your own shop, or online.
Flat-bottom pouch — most premium
A flat rectangular base with side panels, so it stands like a small box and gives you five printable surfaces instead of two. Best for: premium tea, specialty coffee, dry fruits, gift packs. Typical size: 250 g – 1 kg. Choose it when you're building a premium brand and want the strongest possible shelf presence.
Side gusset bag — low to mid cost
Folded gussets on both sides expand as you fill, so the bag holds a lot of volume for its size. The classic tea-shop bag. Best for: bulk tea, coffee beans, rice, flour, atta. Typical size: 500 g – 5 kg. Choose it when you're packing larger quantities and want the lowest cost per kilo packed.
Spout pouch — premium
A stand-up pouch fitted with a screw-cap spout, so the product can be poured and the pack resealed properly. Best for: sauces, honey, juices, edible oils, liquid pickle. Typical size: 200 g – 1 kg. Choose it when your product is liquid or semi-liquid and the customer needs to pour it more than once.
Add-ons you can put on almost any pouch
Zipper — customer reseals after opening (almost expected now on tea, spices and dry fruits). Window — a clear panel so buyers can see the product. Tear notch — opens by hand, no scissors. Hang hole — lets the pack hang on a shop rail. Degassing valve — only for freshly roasted coffee. Finish — matte, glossy, kraft paper or metallic silver, which alone changes how premium the pack feels.
Premium or mass market? The real decision
There is no “best” pouch — only the one that fits how you sell. Go stand-up (or flat-bottom) if you sell direct to customers who see the pack, want to charge a premium, and your packs are 100 g and above. Go centre-seal pillow if you sell through kirana shops and distributors, compete on rate with thin margins, and run small packs at ₹5/₹10/₹20 price points.
Two things worth knowing before you order
Shape is not freshness. Shape decides how your pack looks and stands. How long your product stays fresh comes from the material the pouch is made of — a beautiful stand-up pouch in the wrong material will still let your namkeen go rancid. Start simple: if you're new and selling to people who can see your product, begin with a ready-made stand-up pouch with a zipper — no machine, no printing order, no minimum of thousands.
Pick the shape for your customer. Pick the material for your product. Our material guide explains which finish protects tea, spices, dry fruits, pickles and snacks.
